I have a relatively crazy work schedule where I typically don’t get home before 9 p.m. most nights. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do and don’t mind long work days, but after a while, long days and no downtime takes a toll on my physical and mental health. After a while of this pattern, I knew something had to be done to create more balance in my life.
Recently, I have updated my morning routine to include more time for self-care, and make sure to dedicate time every night to my personal well being. Not only has this lead to decreased stress, but has also increased my productivity significantly. Most importantly, taking the time to take care of myself every night, has allowed me to be more present for everyone in my life.
Here’s what I do every night to wind down and relax:
Spend time with friends/family and dog
At the end of every day, I always make a point to enrich my relationships with friends and family. Whether it’s a phone call, text or Facetime call, I make sure I’m not losing touch with those that motivate, encourage and support me. Snuggling with my dog at the end of the day is also super relaxing for me.
Cook a healthy meal
Cooking is another therapeutic activity for me. Most of my meals are eaten on the go or prepared ahead of time; so cooking is always something to look forward to. Most of what I cook consists of 2-3 varieties of vegetables and a side of vegetarian protein. I gather dinner inspiration from Pinterest, so if you’re looking for healthy dinner options, be sure to follow me there.
Skincare
Having an obsession with skincare, taking my makeup off and applying a mask or my skincare products is totally therapeutic for me. I’m a big believer of investing in skincare so less makeup is necessary – so, taking care of my skin is a big form of self-care for me.
Work on my blog
More work?! YES. Writing here as never felt like work, and honestly energizes me. Being creative and building my business ends the night on the right foot and gets me excited for the next day.
Take a bath or shower
I don’t do this every night, but if I’m feeling sore or need a little extra Zen, I’ll take a bath (typically accompanied by a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.)
If I don’t take a bath, I’ll take a hot shower and follow it up with body brushing with Vitamin C oil, which feels amazing and helps me relax after a long day.
Comfy PJ’s
Getting myself a pair of monogrammed PJ’s is one of the best things I’ve done for my nighttime routine. Putting on a pair of silk pj’s after a shower and body brushing is one of the highlights of my day. I’m currently loving the Piping Long PJ set in blush by Homebodii.
Read something on a book (no technology)
About an hour before bed, I turn off all electronics and read a physical book. The blue light from our screens is terrible for sleep and throws off our circadian rhythm. For the next two weeks, I encourage you to turn off all electronics an hour before bed and find a relaxing activity to do before bed. Let me know how your sleep is affected!
Essential Oils + Candle
Before bed, I add a few drops of Saje Eucalpltyus essential oil into my diffuser. This creates a calming space that promotes sleep, and my room smells heavenly. I also spray my sheets with the Fresh Air Revitalizing Room spray by Saje.
I’ll also light my Baies Diptyque candle in my home to create a relaxing environment. If you haven’t gotten your hands on one of these candles, I highly recommend.
